Getting Started

Welcome! If you’re new to combining amateur radio with RV travel, this is the perfect place to begin.

Step 1: Get Your Amateur Radio License

If you aren’t licensed yet, earning your Technician Class license is a great first step. It opens the door to local communications, emergency preparedness, and many exciting aspects of amateur radio.

Step 2: Choose Your Equipment

You don’t need an elaborate station to get started. Many RVers begin with:

  • A dual-band VHF/UHF mobile radio
  • A quality antenna
  • A handheld transceiver
  • A reliable 12-volt power source

As your interests grow, you can expand into HF, digital modes, satellite communications, and portable operations.

Step 3: Learn Mobile Operating

Operating from an RV presents unique opportunities and challenges. We’ll show you how to install equipment safely, reduce interference, and make the most of your mobile station.

Step 4: Explore

Take your station to campgrounds, state parks, national parks, scenic overlooks, and other beautiful locations. Every stop is a chance to make new contacts and enjoy the hobby.

Most importantly—have fun. Amateur radio is one of the few hobbies that combines technology, public service, travel, and lifelong learning.
